What is a Capybara?
A Capybara is a large, semi-aquatic rodent native to parts of South America. Capybaras are the largest rodent in the world and are closely related to guinea pigs and rock cavies.
They are highly social animals and often live in groups of 10-30, sometimes more during dry seasons. Groups living together help with predator detection and social bonding.
Capybaras are excellent swimmers. Their webbed feet, eyes and nostrils positioned high on their head make them perfectly suited for the water! Capybaras also use water to keep cool.
Capybara’s live in wetlands, rivers, lakes, swamps and flooded grasslands but due to their calm and inquisitive nature often venture into more populated areas in the wild.
They are herbivores eating grasses, aquatic plants, fruit and tree bark.

Average Size: 1m - 1.3metres in length
Weight: 35-65kg
Lifespan: ~8-10 years in the wild
