Where can I see a Capybara in Australia?
While Capybara’s are not native to Australia or out the in the wild, there’s some great zoos and wildlife parks that offer up the chance to meet a real-life Capybara in person. We’ve done our best to provide the full list below. Capybara encounters can be booked out months in advance so we always encourage you to plan ahead.
Queensland
Queensland offers some of the best chances to see real Capybara’s with some incredible parks. We’re also slight bias to our Queensland spots, Stay Capy’s home is Brisbane so we’re just up the road!
· Wildlife HQ – 76 Nambour Connection Rd, Nambour QLD
We’ve got a soft spot for Wildlife HQ having visited numerous times. Located on the Sunshine Coast right next to the Big Pineapple. Check out their Capybara encounter page for more information. The photo on this page is of Wildlife HQ’s Capys.
· Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary – 28 Tomewin St, Currumbin QLD
Spread across 27 hectares and home to more than 1,000 animals. Check out their Capybara page including how to book encounters.
· Darling Downs Zoo – 21 Baines Road, Pilton, QLD
Located just 2 hours west of Brisbane, the Zoo and Wildlife Sanctuary is home to Capybaras. Check out their encounters page and scroll down to see the Capybaras!
New South Wales
· Taronga Zoo – Bradleys Head Road, Sydney NSW
One of Australia’s most iconic Zoo’s and a great day out in Sydney. Check out their Capybara page for more information.
· Sydney Zoo – Great Western Hwy, Sydney NSW
Only 40 minutes from Sydney’s CBD, Sydney Zoo is home to over 150 species of animals. Capybara encounters are also available.
· Altina Wildlife Park – 14432 Sturt Hwy, Darlington Point NSW
See animals close up and do a Zoofari! Travel around the park in style on a personalised horse drawn cart or motorised carts. Check out their Capybara page for more info.
· Hunter Valley Wildlife Park – 138 Lomas Ln, Cessnock NSW
A local Hunter Valley favourite for over 30 years, it’s always a great day out at Hunter Valley Wildlife Park. Daily Capybara encounters are available to book.
Amazement Farm & Fun Park / Central Coast Zoo - 170 Yarramalong Rd, Wyong Creek NSW

South Australia
· Gorge Wildlife Park – 30 Redden Dr, Cudlee Creek SA

· Adelaide Zoo – Plane Tree Dr, Adelaide SA
